Top Big Mistakes to Avoid on your Disney World Trip

Top Big Mistakes to Avoid at Disney World: A Guide for a Flawless Vacation

Disney World is a place of magic, joy, and wonder, but even in the happiest place on Earth, a few missteps can turn a dream vacation into a less than magical experience. To ensure your trip is as enchanting as it should be, here's a list of the top 15 big mistakes to avoid:

Skipping the Planning Phase

Disney World is vast and overwhelming. Not planning your visit can lead to missed opportunities and unnecessary stress. Research attractions, Genie +, and make dining reservations well in advance.

Disney is certainly unlike any other vacation. It is a unique vacation destination that requires more than just showing up. Unlike many other trips, a visit to Disney World demands careful preparation and planning in advance to truly make the most of the magical experience. It's essential to strategize your visit well before you arrive, ensuring every moment is as enchanting as you've dreamed.

Underestimating the Size of Disney World

Disney World is huge! It is actually larger in size than the island of Manhattan. So, it's easy to underestimate the amount of time it takes to get from one park to another. Allow extra time for transportation, especially if you have dining reservations or FastPasses in different parks.

The large size of Disney World is another reason I recommend staying onsite. Not only is this going to give you some extra perks during your trip but it definitely makes life much easier being closer to the parks.

Forgetting to Download the My Disney Experience App

This app is your best friend in the park. It provides wait times, showtimes, park maps, and the ability to make Genie+ selections on the go. And, that is just naming a few of the many planning features this app has for guests. If you want to have a smooth trip, I HIGHLY recommend learning how to navigate the app and all of its features. If you know how to use the app correctly, you will 100% have a much smoother and less stressful vacation.

Not Making Dining Reservations

Disney's sit-down restaurants are extremely popular. Failing to make reservations can mean missing out on some fantastic dining experiences. Book up to 60 days in advance from your check in date.

Wearing Uncomfortable Shoes

You'll be walking a lot, so comfortable footwear is a must. Avoid blisters and sore feet by wearing well-broken-in, supportive shoes. I recommend brining multiple pairs of shoes for your trip. Even if your favorite Nike’s do not hurt your feet normally, walking 25,000+ steps per day may be a different story. So, pack a few pairs of shoes in your luggage to have to wear on different park days.

Not Preparing for the Weather

Florida weather can be unpredictable. Be prepared for hot sun and sudden rain showers. Pack sunscreen, hats, rain ponchos, and lightweight clothing. Check out my product recommendations here on items to take with you to prevent unexpected mishaps during your trip.

Arriving Late in the Day

Getting to the parks late means you’ll miss the opportunity to enjoy shorter lines in the morning. Aim to arrive before the parks open. If the scheduled park opening time is 9 am, I recommend being at the entrance of the park at 7:45 at the latest! Pro tip- they actually allow you to enter parks before scheduled opening time. So, be sure to get there early so you can knock out some of the more popular rides and attractions that have high wait times later in the day.

Skipping the Genie+ System

Not utilizing Genie+ is a missed opportunity to save time. Use your Genie + selections for popular attractions and save hours of waiting in line. Genie + can be confusing as you cannot plan for this in advance. You make your ride selections for Genie throughout your park day in real time. Check out my Genie + planning and park guide to ensure you’re prepared and know how to use Genie + the RIGHT WAY. With using our methods in the guide, you will certainly be able to see and do more during your park days without having to wait in long lines all day.

Neglecting Hydration and Rest

It's easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget to drink water and rest. Dehydration and exhaustion can ruin a fun day. Take regular breaks and stay hydrated.

Pro Tip- You can get free ice water at any of the Disney Quick Service Dining locations.

Overpacking for the Park

Lugging around heavy bags can be tiring. Bring only the essentials – you can rent lockers if needed for extra items.

Not Staying On-Site for the Extra Perks

Staying at a Disney World resort offers extra benefits like Extra Magic Hours and free transportation. These perks can greatly enhance your experience.

On top of the obvious perks of staying onsite, this makes your life so much easier getting to and from the parks. Did you know Disney has roads only used by Disney transportation? This means you get to the parks much quicker than offsite guests. I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have been to the Ticket and Transportation Center to see massive lines and crowds trying to get to the parks. And, for those who do not know the TTC is parking for guests who are not staying onsite.

Eating at Peak Times

Try to eat meals at off-peak times to avoid long lines and crowded dining areas. Consider having an early lunch or a late dinner. Unless of course, you have dining reservations.

When ordering at quick service locations, you definitely need to use the mobile ordering feature on the Disney World app. This will save you so much time!

Ignoring Character Meet and Greets

These are unique opportunities to interact with and hug your favorite Disney characters. They’re not just for kids and can be a highlight of your trip.

Not Checking the Park Schedule

Each day, Disney World offers parades, shows, and fireworks. Not checking the schedule might mean you’ll miss these spectacular events.

Also, at times Disney offers special ticketed after hours events. With this, the park typically closes earlier for regular park guests. If you have only planned to visit Magic Kingdom on one day and you show up the day of a Halloween party or Christmas party, you will have to leave the park by 6pm. So, you will sadly miss out on so much in the parks and the fireworks at night.

Trying to Do Too Much in One Visit

Disney World can't be fully experienced in one visit. Over-scheduling can lead to a stressful trip. Focus on your must-dos and save some attractions for next time. I recommend to my clients to make a list of their top 5 rides and attractions for each park and to prioritize those each day.

Remember, a trip to Disney World should be filled with fun, laughter, and magical memories. By avoiding these common mistakes, you can ensure your visit to the Magic Kingdom and beyond is as smooth and enjoyable as possible. So, pack your bags, grab your Mickey ears, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the world of Disney!
